All days of the week are masculine in German (der Montag, der Dienstag).

Prepositions with Days of the Week

Am + day of the week – on a specific day

Examples:

  • Ich arbeite am Montag. (I work on Monday.)

  • Am Freitag gehen wir ins Kino. (On Friday, we're going to the cinema.)

👉 The preposition am is a contraction of an + dem, used to refer to days and parts of the day.

Jeden + day of the week (accusative case) – every Monday, Tuesday

Day of the week + ending -s indicates habitual or regular action, e.g. montags (on Mondays).
No need to use any preposition before such words!

  • Freitags arbeiten wir nur bis 14 Uhr.  (On Fridays we only work until 2 PM.)
