Making appointments

Practise making, accepting and moving appointments with friends, at the hairdresser’s and at the doctor’s. A polite leider and a new suggestion make a refusal friendly.

You call the hairdresser’s because you want an appointment. What do you say first?

absagen = to cancel.

You want to meet a friend on Friday. How do you ask?

You ask a question – which option is really a question about now?

The receptionist asks: „Passt Ihnen Dienstag um 10 Uhr?“ You can come then. What do you say?

With passen, the person is in the dative (mir).

A friend asks: „Können wir uns um 18 Uhr treffen?“ You can only come at 19 Uhr. What do you say?

Say no to 18 Uhr and offer another time.

You can’t come to your doctor’s appointment on Monday and want a new one. What do you say on the phone?

Say what doesn’t work and ask for another day.

A colleague asks when you have time for a meeting today. You are free all afternoon. What do you say?

The meeting is today, not yesterday.

At the end of the phone call you want to repeat the appointment to be sure. What do you say?

Repeat the day and time you agreed on.

A friend suggests Saturday, but you are visiting your parents that day. What do you say?

Use leider and give your reason.

You are ten minutes late for a meeting with a friend. You send a voice message. What do you say?

später = later, früher = earlier.

The receptionist asks: „Waren Sie schon einmal bei uns?“ It’s your first visit. What do you say?

zum ersten Mal = for the first time.
