Talking about the past

Practise telling people what you did, using the Perfekt as Germans do in conversation. Choose the natural sentence for each situation – most verbs use haben, verbs of movement use sein.

A friend asks: „Was hast du am Wochenende gemacht?“ What do you answer?

The question is about the past. Answer in the Perfekt.

You want to say that you went to Vienna by train last summer. What do you say?

Verbs of movement form the Perfekt with sein.

A colleague asks: „Wie war dein Urlaub?“ What do you answer?

Tell what you did on holiday.

You explain to a colleague why you are tired. What do you say?

Does schlafen take haben or sein?

A friend likes your jacket. You tell her you bought it yesterday. What do you say?

kaufen is a regular verb.

A friend asks: „Warum warst du nicht auf der Party?“ What do you answer?

Does bleiben take haben or sein?

You can’t open the door because you lost your key. What do you tell your flatmate?

Look at the past participle of verlieren.

Someone asks: „Wann bist du nach Deutschland gekommen?“ What do you answer?

Wann? asks for a point in time.

A friend asks: „Hast du den Film schon gesehen?“ You haven’t seen it. What do you say?

The opposite of schon is noch nicht.

You tell a colleague about yesterday evening. Which sentence is natural?

After Gestern, where does the verb go?
