When to Use "wie" or "als" in German Comparisons

Choosing between wie and als is one of the most important grammar skills in German. Although both words are often translated into English as "as" or "than", German uses them in very specific situations. Using the wrong one immediately sounds incorrect to native speakers.

Core Rule: Equality vs. Inequality

The foundation of the rule is the following:

• wie → expresses equality or similarity

• als → expresses inequality or difference

wie in Equal Comparisons

Common structures

• so + adjective + wie (as + adjective + as):

  • Der Film ist so spannend wie das Buch. – The movie is as exciting as the book.

• genauso / ebenso + adjective + wie (just as / exactly as + adjective + as):

  • Sie ist genauso intelligent wie ihr Bruder. – She is just as intelligent as her brother.

• so viel(e) + noun + wie – (as much / as many + noun + as):

  • Ich habe so viel Arbeit wie du. – I have as much work as you.

als with Comparative Adjectives

When an adjective ends in -er, it must be followed by als.

Examples:

1. Dieses Haus ist größer als das andere. –This house is bigger than the other one.

2. Deutsch ist schwieriger als Englisch. – German is more difficult than English.

3. Heute bin ich glücklicher als gestern. – Today I am happier than yesterday.

⚠️ Never use wie after a comparative adjective.

wie and als with Adverbs

Both words are also used with adverbs (schnell, gut, gern).

Single moment in the past

Use als when referring to one specific point or period in the past.

1. Als ich nach Deutschland kam, sprach ich kein Deutsch. – When I came to Germany, I spoke no German.

2. Es begann zu regnen, als wir das Haus verließen. – It started to rain when we left the house.

Difference from wenn

• als → one-time past event

• wenn → repeated events or conditions

Example comparison:

• Als ich jung war, lebte ich in München. (one period)

• Wenn ich jung war, spielte ich oft draußen. (repeated)

wie Meaning "Like" or "In the Same Way"

Examples:

1. Er lacht wie ein Kind. – He laughs like a child.

Correct usage

• wie → comparison or description

• als → official role, function, or status

Examples:

Fixed Expressions with wie

Some expressions always use wie.
